<headline>Special Olympics to participate at ATF Summer Camp.</headline>
		<date>Friday, March 28</date>
<copy_intro>Special Olympics Nevada will be participating at the 2nd Annual ATF Summer Camp on May 17, 2008. Special Olympics Nevada is a free year-round sports training and competition program for children and adults with developmental disabilities. </copy_intro>

<copy_full>Special Olympics Nevada is a free year-round sports training and competition program for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Training and competitions are offered throughout Nevada in 14 sports: Alpine Skiing, Aquatics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cross Country Skiing, Floor Hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Snowshoeing, Soccer, Softball and Track & Field.

How did Special Olympics get started?
The concept for Special Olympics was born in the early 1960s when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp for people with developmental disabilities at her home in Rockville, Maryland. The first International Special Olympics Games were held in 1968 at Soldier Field, Chicago, with 1,000 athletes with developmental disabilities from 26 states and Canada. Special Olympics is now one of the most successful sports and volunteer organizations in the world and touches the lives of every one in six families in America, directly through its athletes or indirectly through its coaches, donors or volunteers. There are programs in every state of America and in 169 countries worldwide serving more than two million Special Olympics athletes. In Nevada, 3,022 athletes’ ages 8 - 80 participated in Special Olympics programs in 2006.

Who is eligible for Special Olympics?
Throughout Nevada, there are thousands of individuals with developmental disabilities who can benefit from Special Olympics sports programs. In order to compete, eligible athletes must be at least 8 years old. Children ages 5 through 7 may participate in training, but cannot officially compete until they are 8 years of age.

What kind of programs do we offer?
Special Olympics is founded on the belief that individuals with developmental disabilities can, with support, encouragement and training, learn and enjoy participating in individual and team sports. Our sports trainings are geared toward the ability level of our athletes and our competitions are designed so that athletes compete against athletes of the approximate same ability level.

Individual skills competition is designed for athletes who may not be ready for team sports. Individual skills competition takes the basic components of a team sport and breaks them down into individual skills. For each of these skills, the athlete is given a score and awarded on how well they scored against their fellow individual skills athletes.

For athletes with severe disabilities, Special Olympics created its Motor Activities Training Program (MATP), developed by physical educators, physical therapists, and recreation therapists, for those athletes who have severe disabilities. MATP emphasizes training and participation rather than competition.

Unified Sports® is a team experience that combines approximately equal numbers of athletes with and without developmental disabilities, of similar age and ability. In Nevada, bowling, soccer, basketball, track and field, and MATP are offered as unified sports.

Special Olympics is continuing to expand its Special Olympics Schools Partnership Program - a comprehensive sports training and competition program integrated into the regular school day for special education students. In 2006-2007, the Clark County Unified School District's partnership program served more than 2,200 students.

How do I volunteer?
Athletes are why we exist, and volunteers are how we exist. More than 1,200 volunteers make our local programs run each year. They serve as coaches, officials, trainers, directors and in a variety of other valuable roles. To volunteer, call 877-417-2742 or sign-up online at: www.sonv.org.

Where do we get our funding from?
Special Olympics Nevada receives no federal or state funding. Financial support comes almost exclusively from individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations. Fundraising events are held throughout the year, including Dinner of Champions, Law Enforcement Torch Run, World's Largest Truck Convoy and Pulte Homes Charity Golf Tournament. To find out how to make a donation or to attend one of our fundraisers, please visit: www.sonv.org.

Is it truly free?
There are training and competition opportunities every day within Special Olympics Nevada. Special Olympics is free to our athletes. We provide such things as transportation to and from competitions, uniforms and equipment at no cost to them or their families. This is possible thanks to the generous support from individuals and businesses who believe in the spirit of Special Olympics.

What kind of competitions do you have?
Each sport requires a minimum of eight training sessions, and then athletes can move onto regional, state and even world competitions.

Is ATF a supporter of the Special Olympics Nevada?
At ATF®, we use martial arts to instill values and discipline to the students who walk through our doors. The fruits of our labor manifest in the form of better grades, manners, and ultimately changed lives. Every day we receive reports of children whose lives have been transformed by the training they receive at ATF®.

We view the ATF Summer Camp as an excellent opportunity to give back to the community. It is our sincere wish that the Summer Camp is a great success for all those participating.

Events scheduled for this years Summer Camp is a seminar with ATF Instructors and a "Board Break-A-Thon" whose proceeds will be donated to the Special Olympics of Nevada.

<copy_full>Las Vegas, Nevada - February 29th marked an awesome event with Lightweight Ryan Schultz and Heavyweight Roy Nelson successfully defending their respective titles in front of the Las Vegas faithful at the Orleans Arena. Schultz earned a unanimous decision over his opponent John Gunderson to retain his Lightweight title.

Las Vegas’ own Roy Nelson successfully defended his title against Fabiano Scherner with a first round TKO. Midway through the first round Nelson took down his opponent against the ropes and pounded out a spectacular victory with a devastating right hand to secure the stoppage at three minutes and twenty seconds into the fight.

The final title bout of the night lead to an upset as challenger Ryan McGivern toppled then champion Matt Horwich of Portland, Oregon. The bout lasted for five rounds with the former champion nearly securing a figure four armbar at the end of the second round only to be foiled by the bell. At the closing of the fourth round , McGivern delivered a series of devastating strikes to the former champ, but Hrowich weathered the storm to the end. The result was McGivern winning by unanimous decision.

During the night the championship matches were proceeded by camp versus camp matches. Mario Sperry’s World Class Fight Center and Lion’s Den/Team Quest were all victorious. Rafael Diaz secured a victory for Sperry’s WCFC over Santino Defranco two minutes into the first round by rear choke submission.

The 185lbs weight class saw hometown hero Josh Haynes of Las Vegas defeat Leopoldo Serao of San Francisco by unanimous decision to even the two camps at one a piece. Mario Sperry’s WCFC took two out of three bouts with Alexandre Ferreira securing a rear choke over Lew Polley in just twenty seconds of the first round!

Team Quest secured a win when Jake Ellenberger of Omaha, Nebraska won a decision over Pat Healy of Ken Shamrock’s Lion’s Den. Defending Lightweight champion Schultz’s win over Gunderson secured a win for Team Quest, while hometown favorite “Big Country” Nelson’s successful title defense provided the final 2-1 margin.

Prior to the team matches, Ian Loveland of Portland submitted Dennis Davis of Las Vegas with a guillotine choke in the second round of their featherweight bout.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                          </copy_full>

<copy_full>North Las Vegas, Nevada - It was another successful testing on February 22nd with the students of the American Taekwondo Federation demonstrating the skills they have honed over the past two months. It was a long and grueling day, but the students of ATF were able to show friends and family that they had the fortitude to rise to the challenge of demonstrating the requirements needed for promotion.

It was also history in the making as family and friends witnessed the first student from the ATF Aliante location to test for black belt, Miss Calie Cline. “She has shown tremendous tenacity to get to this point. She will do fine” Mr. Garcia declared as Miss Cline took the floor to demonstrate her techniques to the onlookers. The ATF Academy was honored to have the current International Fight League Heavyweight Champion, Roy “Big Country” Nelson participate in the first ATF testing of 2008. “Big Country” and the Production Coordinator, Mr. Jay Zdon were absolutely impressed with the testing and the hospitality that the American Taekwondo Federation provided. So impressed were Mr. Zdon and “Big Country” were with the hospitality they were provided they promised to contact Mr. Melatti again when the IFL has another event in town.

All in all, it was a historical and eventful testing to say the least. February’s testing rose the standard for all other testing to emulate. The ATF staff and the representatives of the International Fight League were thrilled with the turnout and how the testing was conducted. Congratulations to all of the testers and a big “thank you” for Mr. Nelson and Mr. Zdon for showing their support for the ATF Academy.

<copy_full>We at ATF BLACK BELT ACADEMY are excited and proud to announce that fighters and trainers of the International Fight League will be visiting our school on Saturday, February 16th at 11am. They will be signing autographs and taking pictures so bring your camera! Mixed martial arts competitions grew in popularity during the early 1990's with fighters such as Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock. However, with all of the mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions flooding the market during the 21st century one can boast as being the first MMA league. Unlike its competition, the International Fight League promotes fight "camps" that compete in team competition throughout the year. There are also individual championship titles that fighters in separate weight classes compete for. Camps consist of up and coming fighters trained under a veteran MMA champion. <headline>ATF Introduces Winter Schedule</headline>
		<date>Friday, January 1</date>
<copy_intro>ATF have recently introduced the new Winter Schedule for the ATF Academy in North Las Vegas. Following the success of his ATF Schools, Mr. Melatti strives for the highest Taekwondo training facility by offering different classes schedule.</copy_intro>
		<image_thumb>/flashes/news_content/schedule_thumb.jpg</image_thumb>
<copy_full>Las Vegas, NV – Mr. Allan Melatti, founder of the American Taekwondo Federation, has recently introduced the new Winter Schedule for the ATF Academy in North Las Vegas. Following the success of his ATF Schools, Mr. Melatti strives for the highest Taekwondo training facility by offering different classes schedule to its student body. Based primarily in Southern Nevada, ATF is an ITF style Taekwondo, as originally developed in Korea in 1955 by General Choi Hong Hi.

Together with other schools in the United States, ATF Academy is part of the Executive Black Belt Program (EBB). The EBB program is a practical self-defense system with members of the Taekwondo schools and other martial arts and is supported by Master Jason Wadley.

Taekwondo is an ancient form of Martial Arts (unarmed combat) practiced for many centuries in the Orient, and came to be perfected in its present form in Korea. It is not only an effective, weaponless art of self-defense, but also a competitive sport and a good method of maintaining all-round fitness.

ATF Academy offer students the opportunity to become a Black Belt in a well known and respected Martial Art. As well as learn street useful self-defense techniques, compete in sporting tournaments throughout the US and abroad and generally be more healthier and confident. You can discover more about ATF Academy by visiting their web site at http://www.atfacademy.com

As an exercise Taekwondo is equally suitable for the more mature as well as for young men, women and children. Many Taekwondo practitioners report improved health and fitness levels after regular training.

Taekwondo is for everyone, whether a you are a young 6 year old, or a more mature 60+ year old. It is designed so that even someone with the slightest build and musculature can defend themselves against the largest of attackers. It is the technique itself and not the build of the student that generates power. Anyone can do it, all you have to do is start.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                            </copy_full>

To understand Harry Reid, you must look to the small mining town of Searchlight, Nevada.

There in the desert, more than an hour away from the bright lights of Las Vegas, is where he was born and raised.

Searchlight is where Harry Reid watched his father work as a hardrock miner. It’s where he attended a school with one teacher for eight grades. And it’s where he learned Nevada values like hard work, opportunity and independence.

Today Harry Reid is the Democratic Leader in the U.S. Senate, a man who commands the respect of colleagues from both parties, and a powerful advocate for Nevada’s middle-class families.

But he still lives in Searchlight … and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there.

The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reid’s story by saying that he “has gone from underdog to Senate’s top dog.”

Parade Magazine, the nation’s largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with “integrity and guts.”

Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, “We all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work.”

And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, “Harry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much.”

Reid enjoys a close working relationship with Nevada’s junior U.S. Senator, Republican John Ensign. Despite the fact that they belong to different political parties, they share a commitment to Nevada families and businesses. In fact, Senators Reid and Ensign co-host a weekly breakfast in the U.S. Capitol every Thursday that the Senate is in session, and Nevadans visiting Washington D.C. are always welcome.

After Nevadans re-elected Reid to a third Senate term in 1998, he was chosen by his colleagues to serve as the Assistant Democratic Leader, also known as the “Whip.” And after he won a fourth term in 2004 by a wide margin, he was unanimously elected Senate Democratic Leader.

Reid is using that position to stand up for values such as opportunity, personal responsibility, and security – the same values he learned as a boy in Searchlight.

Harry Reid isn’t afraid to speak his mind - but he isn’t afraid to listen, either.

Like the desert country that formed him, he doesn’t cry out for attention. He’s soft spoken - but when he talks, people listen.

He has earned the trust of both Democrats and Republicans, and his reputation for integrity and fairness has given the small state of Nevada a powerful voice in Congress.

Standing Tall For Nevada

Since he came to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has built a strong record of accomplishments for the people of Nevada.

To protect our senior citizens, he passed a ban on “source taxes” of out-of-state pensions. He has fought to provide help with prescription drug costs, and to protect Medicare and Social Security.

To honor our commitment to America’s veterans, he has fought to repeal the policy that deducted disability benefits from earned military retirement pay.

To make America stronger, he has used his seniority in the Senate to secure additional funds for Nevada’s military installations, and to establish a national training center for first responders at the Nevada Test Site.

To open the door of opportunity for our children, he has secured more federal resources for education, including programs to reduce the dropout rate and to make classes smaller so students can get more individual attention.

To keep our families healthy, he has worked to cut health care costs, improve the quality of care, and expand coverage. He has fought for a Patients' Bill of Rights, increased cancer research, suicide prevention and mental health initiatives.

To preserve Nevada’s beauty and keep our air and water clean, he has worked to protect Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon and other natural treasures.

To reduce traffic congestion that steals time from our families and work, he has secured funding for highways and new transportation choices like the Las Vegas Monorail and the MAX bus service.

And because Senator Reid knows that a good quality of life starts with a good job, he has worked to help small business, as well as major Nevada industries like tourism and mining.

Taken together, the work and achievements of Senator Reid have made Nevada a better place to live, work and raise a family.

A Focus on Family

Born in the small rural mining town of Searchlight, Harry Reid grew up in a small cabin without indoor plumbing, and attended a two-room elementary school.

As a small boy he would accompany his father, harry Reid Sr., for long days deep underground in the mines. His father was a hardrock miner with an 8th grade education and his mother never completed high school; yet the youngest of Harry and Inez Reid's four sons would go on to achieve the American dream.

Searchlight had no high school, so after eighth grade, Harry began attending Basic High School in Henderson, where he boarded with local families during the school week.

It was at Basic that he met Landra Gould, who became his high-school sweetheart. In 1959, two years after they had graduated from Basic, Harry and Landra were married. In 1961, their first child and only daughter – Lana - was born. Son Rory was born in 1962, and three more brothers followed - Leif, Josh, and Key.

Basic High was also where Reid met a teacher named Mike O’Callaghan who would play many roles in his life: teacher, boxing coach, political mentor, trusted advisor and best friend.

After high school, some businessmen in Henderson helped him go on to college, an act of generosity that Harry Reid would work hard to repay in the coming years. He graduated from Utah State University in 1961 and went on to get a law degree from George Washington University. During these years as a law student, Reid supported his young family by working nights as a U.S. Capitol police officer.

After completing law school, the Reids headed back to Henderson where Harry served as the City Attorney, revising the city charter and working on extending Henderson's boundaries by acquiring federal land. His outstanding record helped him win an election to the Nevada State Assembly in 1968, at age 28.

In Carson City, the young assemblyman introduced the first air pollution legislation in Nevada’s history and also worked on laws to protect consumers. In 1970, at the age of 30, Harry Reid became the youngest Lieutenant Governor in Nevada history, winning election as Governor Mike O’Callaghan’s running mate.

In 1977 he was appointed Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission, where for five years he made headlines with his legendary and unrelenting fight to clean up Nevada's gaming industry.

Reid returned to his private law practice for a few years, then won the first of two terms in the United States House of Representatives in 1982. In the House, he championed issues important to Nevada families, introducing the Taxpayer Bill of Rights as well as legislation to protect Nevada's wilderness.

He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees.

Reid is a tireless worker, and it isn’t unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night.

Despite the demands of his career in government, Harry Reid's family has always been his first priority. The bonds forged in the tight-knit family have only grown stronger as the Reid children have grown up, embarked on their own careers, and started their own families. </copy_full>
